1. Draw your design on a piece of paper, incorporate the Guide Trefoil and any design to link the guiding Family ? Ask you Leader to download a template from girlguiding website for you to copy OR you could visit the Guide website for inspiration. www.girlguiding.org.uk remember your design will need to be simple as you will be using wax.
2. Using a pencil copy or trace your design onto the cushion/sitter/bag.
3. Light a candle and carefully drip the wax over the lines of your design, or use a paint brush ? Be aware of the dangers of a naked flame if you have long hair please make sure you have it tied back. Never leave a naked flame unattended.
4. Allow the wax to thoroughly cool, it should be transparent.
5. While waiting for it to cool, check the instructions on the cool water dye, then make up the lightest of the two colours. Wear rubber gloves and old clothes or an apron. Dip the material into the dye and leave according to the instructions, make sure you rinse thoroughly in clean water.
6. If you are using 2 dyes; once the material is dry , repeat steps 2 ? 5
7. When dry again, sandwich between thick layers of old newspapers. Set an Iron to Hot ? Please ensure the owner of the iron is happy for you to use it also if it is a steam iron make sure it hasn?t and water in it!! ? Iron on top of the newspaper sandwich ? take care to move the iron and not to have left static on the newspaper. This will absorb the wax from the material, leaving behind your brilliant batik design. You will need to change the newspaper as it becomes clogged with was, so make sure you have plenty!
8. Once dried and ironed place stuffing in the cushion or sitter and stitch the end to finish.
