On 22 February 1857 a man who was to have a great vision was born, a vision that would be shared and become part of the lives of millions of boys and girls all over the world.
And also on 22nd February but in 1889 Olave Soames was born and her destiny was to meet and to marry this man. Which they did in 1912,
Together they would work and build this great movement of ours and she would become the first and only Chief Guide of the World.
It all began in1907 when BP tried out his great idea on a little island not far from here called Brownsea.
He took 20 boys from different backgrounds to camp on Brownsea Island and from those very small beginnings a game called Scouting for Boys was born and soon spread throughout the land.
The Girls wanted to play this game too and many turned up dressed in Scout Uniform at the first Scout Rally of all time being held at the Crystal Palace in London. This was in1909. BP saw them and spoke to them and they told him they wanted to be play a part in this game too.
So he went home and gave a great deal of thought as to what would be best for the Girls Together with the help his sister Agnes Girl Guide Movement was born in 1910.
It proved so exciting and popular that it spread very fast all over the United Kingdom and in the same year out into the great big wide world.
The Girls in Canada wanted to be a part of this great game and it spread from Canada into the United States of America. In America they decided that their girls would be known as Girl Scouts.
It spread down into South America, Mexico, Chile, Peru, Argentina, Brazil and many other coutries there,
The Girls of Australia were not going to be left out and so it spread through out their land too, over to New Zealand and all surrounding Islands.
In South Africa the girls joined in too and it spread throughout Africa up through Zimbabwe, Zambia, Malawi, Kenya, Nigeria , Tanzania, The Ivory Coast, all the way up to the Sahara Desert.
The Girls in India were not going to be left out either and so it spread through to Pakistan, Nepal, Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore, Korea and other countries in Asia.
In the meantime it was still spreading throughout Europe, France, Austria, Germany, Italy, Denmark and so the list goes on.
And so from these very small beginning in 1928 the World Association of Girl Guides and Girls Scouts was born. Now known as WAGGGS.
It was decided that because it had become such a large World Wide Movement with many different cultures and languages, we would need a special World Badge.
The Trefoil, used on the World Badge, is the unifying symbol of WAGGGS. Every part has a meaning.
The golden Trefoil on a bright blue background represents the sun shining over all the children of the world;
The three leaves represent the three-fold Promise as originally laid down by the Founder;
The base of the stalk represents the flame of the love of humanity;
The vein pointing upwards through the centre of the Trefoil represents the compass needle pointing the way;
And the two stars represent the Promise and Law.
It was also decided that we would have a Flag which can be flown anywhere in the world where Guides are present.
The Flag carries the world badge on the centre
A white blaze in the lower, right-hand corner represents WAGGGS' commitment to peace;
This is crowned by three golden blocks symbolizing our three-fold Promise.
In the meantime while all this was happening the younger sisters wanted to play the game too and in 1914 the junior section of the Guides was formed they were called Rosebuds, it wasn't long before they became known as the Brownies and this year they are celebration their 90th birthday
In 1916 the older girls decided that they didn't want to stop being Guides just because they were 16, some of them wanted to stay and help with the younger Guides too. So the Rangers and Cadets were started. The Cadets are now called Young Leaders.
Then in 1943 it was decided that as there were so many people not being able to take an active part in Guiding for various reasons but still wanted to be involved with the ideals of Guiding the Trefoil Guild was born.
And Finally in 1987 We welcomed our very little sisters known as the Rainbows into our great game of Guiding.
And so because we are such a big family spread all over the world it was decided that there should be a special day put aside every year when Guides all over the world should meet and think of each other and
it would be called World Thinking Day and it would happen on the 22nd of February every year and on that day and the nearest weekend to it Guides all over the world would come together in many different ways just to think about each other and give thanks for our Founder B.P. and his wife Olave and for this great movement of ours.
